How Linda found comfort in her home once more

At the Joseph Toomey Charitable Foundation, we understand that a safe, energy-efficient home can make a world of difference to someone's daily life.

The Situation

Working with Citizens Advice Chelmsford, we were informed about a home in need of urgent repairs. The property, over time, had developed several issues that were impacting its long-term safety. The timber windows and doors were damaged and no longer offered proper insulation, the flat roof was leaking due to structural weaknesses, and mould had begun to appear in one of the bedrooms. We understood that without timely intervention, these issues could worsen, posing serious risks to the resident's health and wellbeing.

"The home is now a place they can take pride in"

The Impact

These improvements have made a meaningful difference in the life of the resident. The home is now warmer, drier, more secure, and a place they can take pride in once again. Our work not only corrected physical issues with the property but also helped renew a sense of comfort and peace of mind—something we hold just as valuable as any structural fix.

Our Response

  • New Windows and Doors: We replaced all existing timber windows and doors with high-quality, white UPVC units. To ensure better ventilation moving forward, we included trickle vents—reducing the risk of future damp and mould.
  • Roof Renewal: The old flat roof was fully removed and replaced with new timbers and a durable EPDM roof covering. This not only addressed leakage concerns but also significantly improved insulation.
  • Combating Mould: In the small front bedroom, mould had formed due to poor airflow. We treated the affected area thoroughly and improved air circulation to prevent the issue from reoccurring.
  • Enhancing the Entrance: The front porch door and main entrance door were both upgraded with new white UPVC doors, enhancing both security and aesthetics, while maintaining the dignity of the home.
